ILIOTIBIAL BAND SYDNROME

Dr. Amy M. O’Donnell can diagnose iliotibial band syndrome and offers evidence-based techniques that can lead to a full recovery

Chronic pain in the hip or knee? It may be Iliotibial Band Syndrome

The iliotibial band (ITB) is a fibrous band that runs down the outside of the thigh and provides stability to the knee and hip to prevent dislocation of those joints. The band can become overdeveloped, tighten and rub across the hipbone or the outer part of the knee. Whenever the hip is flexed or knee is bent, the band rubs against the bone. This is particularly common in runners, cyclists and those who participate in aerobic activities.

Symptoms of Iliotibial Band Syndrome

  • Pain on the outside of the hip or knee

  • Snapping hip pain as the ITB moves back and forth over the outside of the hip joint, on the greater trochanter

  • Pain that goes away as the band is stretched out and becomes more flexible

  • Pain that improves with rest, massage or foam rolling

Effective Treatment of Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Graston Technique is a most effective therapy in breaking down the adhesions that lead to the pain along the ITB. Those adhesions are what causes the actual pain from overuse. MLS laser is quite effective in eliminating pain and inflammation often associated with ITB. Adjunctive therapies such as heat, electrical muscle stimulation and ultrasound can aid in relieving pain along the ITB.

Kinesio taping along the ITB allows the patient to carry out activities of daily living without pain in between treatments.

Rehabilitative Exercise is essential in treating and preventing ITB syndrome. Regular use of a foam roller and stretching exercises will help to prevent future exacerbations.

Orthotic Therapy is important if the cause of ITB is due to pronated feet.

It is the combination of the above that ultimately allows for complete recovery of ITB.
